Dan ‘jungleman’ Cates earns his second bracelet in the 2022 World Series of Poker $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship nine-game mix. The 32-year-old Poker pro defeated 112 players in one of the most prominent tournaments in the game. With this win, Cates becomes the first player to win the tournament consecutively for two years.

Last year, Cates made his way to the top from 63 entries to earn his first WSOP bracelet. This year, he got his second bracelet with a top prize of $1,449,103 by defeating Brazilian player Yuri Dzivielevski. Cate’s lifetime earnings have now increased to more than $11.7 million.

The event continued for five days, and the top 17 shared the prize pool. Among the top 17, three players were bracelet winners, while four players were former champions. Another famous player to make a deep run was: bracelet winner Taylor Paur, who finished seventh for a prize of $198,661. Matthew Ashton, the 2013 champion of the same event, only made it to eighth place to earn $155,421.

The 2010 runner-up and Bracelet winner, John Racener, made $100,866 for his twelfth place finish. David Baker, the two-time bracelet champion, got the fifteenth position and received $83,738. Winner of this year’s Heads-up no-limit hold ’em championship, Dan Smith, finished seventeenth to earn $83,738.

 

Final Day Action

The Day five action began with only five players with Cates having the lead. The German player, Johannes Becker, was the first victim of elimination. After losing some key pots, Becker struggled as he moved to the bottom of the counts. Finally, Benny Glaser’s A-Q dominated to send Becker home in fifth place for $343,531.

After a while, Glaser moved all in and eventually lost to the bracelet winner, Naoya Kihara. Glaser received $464,420 for his fourth-place finish. After that, Kihara remained in second place for some time but then lost a crucial pot to Cates. Kihara tried to shorten the gap, but the lead was huge. The Japanese pro started with 8-7-2 and was chasing the 8-3 of Cates. Cates made Q-8-6-5-3 while Kihara had a pair of sevens, which decided his fate in the third place. Kihara earned $639,257 for his third position.

 

The Heads-up Play

With the elimination of Kihara, the heads-up started with Cates having a 3:1 lead. The final battle between Cates and Dzivielevski continued for seven hours. The champion stood firmly, but Dzivielevski gave him a tough time by taking the lead back for almost two hours. Cates, however, stood firmly and gained the control back till the end of the match.

In the final hand, Dzivielevski moved all-in with Q (Diamonds) and 5 (Clubs). Cates called with a J (Diamonds) ad 4 (Diamonds). Cates secured the pot as the board ran out 8 (Spades), 8 (Clubs), 4 (Hearts), 9 (Clubs), and 6 (Hearts). Dzivielevski received $895,614 for his runner-up finish.
