Fare Thee Well Thor Hansen

A Norwegian poker legend, Thor Hansen, has passed away.

Over the years, 71-year old Thor Hansen has been a stellar poker player – winning several high profile events. He is/was arguably the godfather of Norwegian poker. Sadly, he has passed on after a long battle with cancer.

Hansen was born in Oslo – the capital of Norway, in 1947. Thor Hansen was introduced to gambling at a very tender age. At the age of 8, he was already playing a lot of pool and was a racetrack enthusiast. Additionally, he started playing poker in the ’60s at a local racetrack accompanied by his brother.

After being diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago, Hansen was not cowed. He continued to show the world that a diagnosis doesn’t necessarily mean an end to a career. He continued to live his life unperturbed.

Thor Hansen Poker Career

This poker star started to shine in his later years. He was a regular at Las Vegas high profile cash tables. In his poker career, he has won several notable poker tournaments including winning two WSOP bracelets.

He won his first bracelet in 1988. He won the $5,000 seven-card stud event taking home $158,000. After a 12-year hiatus, he won his second WSOP bracelet in 2002. He won the $1,500 no-limit deuce to seven event.

Some of the other notable wins include at Carnivale of poker, California State Poker championship, L.A. Poker Classic, Five Diamond Poker Classic, Festa al Lago Classic, and Legends of poker.

Throughout his career, he has racked up an impressive 189 live cashes. His live earnings are a tad more than $2.6 million. Having said that, he is currently 3rd on Norway’s all-time money list.

Autobiography

Thor Hansen published a biography in 2010. The autobiography, Thor Hansen: Usensurert (Uncensored), includes the nitty-gritty of his life. It not only details his poker career but also encompasses other aspects of his life. It highlights his brief stints as a robber and smuggler, not to mention murder and sex.
