Eileen Sutton had always felt a relentless desire to break the shackles and live her life to its fullest. But at 55, she was stuck. She didn’t like her freelance job, and had severe anxiety and boredom. In her teens, she had a thing for Poker and gambling, but the society programmed her to “be nice” and stay away from the Poker world, which is full of Alpha men, and Alpha women. But things changed for Eileen at a corporate networking event when she came to know more about the dynamics of New York’s underground Poker seen. Eileen started to play Poker, and soon found out that it was her true passion. She never felt short of energy while playing a hand at the table.
“When I played at my regular $1/$2 action-laced Queens spots, I was no longer the trembling 9-year-old locked in a plush bathroom with rose-petal walls, hiding from a stalker. I fell in love with the game because on the felt, aggression was life,” says Eileeen. She says that through Poker, she got a chance to be truly competitive, like we all are in our deepest beings. She got a chance to be brutal, blunt and bold. She started to somewhat enjoy confronting the male-dominant Poker scene. She became good at reading body langue of her opponents, which were mostly men. She started to peak though the apparently rigid and unbreakable looks and bodies of men to find out their deepest vulnerabilities during Poker matches.
Eileen started to acclimate in the underground Poker scene of New York. There were all sorts of people there – Chinese, African-American, Puerto Rican, Indian, Romanian French, British.
Things weren’t easy for Eileen during intense Poker games. Tougher players pushed her. Luka’s Hell’s Kitchen games were the most difficult for Eileen due to the hostile environment and completion. She says that it took her a lot of time to adjust there. She also lost a lot of money while playing at Luka.
Eileen still plays Poker in the men dominated Poker scene of New York. Back in her high school, she used to play with boys. She says that she likes “boyness”. Perhaps that’s why she is acing Poker games now. She also enjoys to challenge herself and face the vulgar, patriarchic environments and come out untouched.
