Jiyoung Kim is the winner of the WSOP Event #47: $1,000/$10,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold’em  tournament. Jiyoung, a South Korean semi-pro, emerged victorious after viciously playing against the best female poker players in Europe for 4 days. The tournament attracted a total of 968 entries and includes reentries in the first 8 levels. The first-place prize for the event was $167,308.

Prior to 2019 WSOP, Jiyoung had 1 WSOP cash from a WSOP circuit event in 2016. Also, her highest live cash before winning the ladies event was $21,939. Without a doubt, her WSOP bracelet and $167,308 cash prize eclipse her lifetime poker achievements before the 2019 WSOP.

Speaking to Pokernews after the win, Jiyoung disclosed that she planned to give her winnings to her mother.

“I’m giving it to my mom. All of it. She is always worried about me going overseas to play poker tournaments. I feel for her that’s why I will give it to her.”

Jiyoung Kim wins final table

The final table consisted of 9 players with each guaranteed at least $11,911. Barbara Blechinger was the first to be sent to the rails in the 9th place and she was rewarded with the mincash. Soon after, Stephanie Hubbard and Raylene Celaya were eliminated in the 7th and 8th places respectively.

In six-handed play, Lexy Gavin, who was arguably the most experienced of the six players, was eliminated by Nancy Matson and a trip to the cashier earned her $27,643.

The next player to be eliminated was Lyly Vo after she hit a brick wall against Kim. She collected $37,564 from the payout desk.

Tu Dao god-like run in Day 2 and Day 3 was undone by a couple of unfortunate plays in the final day which cost her the chip lead. She was later eliminated in fourth place for $52,007.

Three-handed play

After Tu Dao’s elimination, it took about an hour before another elimination. Sandrine Phan, the short stack at the time, was eliminated by Kim for $72,821. However, this was Dao’s first WSOP event and it’s impressive that she managed to hold on for that long.

At the start of the heads up play, Kim was the chip leader. Even though Matson managed to double-up once, a few hands down the line, she was eliminated after her King-eight was trounced by Kim’s Ace-nine.

“I said I would take it slow going into the final table even though there were female players. This is the home of poker so I didn’t want to underestimate the players. I’ve played the Asian Circuit and the players here were way better. I think I got luckier than them. That’s why I’m here right now.”
