North Dakota State Senate decided to vote down the legalisation of online poker on Tuesday, March 30.

A referendum was held to add online poker to their sanctioned gambling activities.

The Senate voted 47-0 count, thus rejecting House Concurrent Resolution No. 3012 that would have positioned legalised online poker on the general ballot in North Dakota come 2022.

The legalisation of online poker will have to wait another two long years before the state can rethink the subject. The bill will face the same challenges, albeit more so as the Senate is staunch on not legalising gambling, no matter how appealing it might be.

There was a thread of hope after the House Concurrent Resolution 3012 passed the lower body on a 54-40 vote in February. Rep Jim Kasper had introduced the bill in January.

This, however, came crashing down when the bill reached the Senate. The Finance and Taxation Committee returned the bill with a dejected 7-0 ‘do not pass’ vote to the Senate floor.

Somehow this recommendation felt way worse compared to the 43-3 thumbs down the Senate passed on a similar bill back in 2005.

 

Prime Sponsor Kasper Thwarted Again

Jim Kasper has been an avid supporter of legalizing online poker in North Dakota. In 2005, he drafted legislation that proposed poker would bring in a whopping $500 million in annual taxes.

When the bill failed, he attempted again by introducing the House Concurrent Resolution 3012 in January 14.

Speaking to the Grand Forks Herald, Kasper argued that there are thousands of people in the state playing online poker unregulated and untaxed.

Given the minuscule population of North Dakota, it is highly unlikely that online poker could garner such a high amount in taxes.

 

The future of online poker in North Dakota

The chances of online poker being legalised in North Dakota are slim to none, but many residents believe the state will get there eventually.

There will be more ardent supporters like Kasper who will continue to push for legalisation.
