Phil Ivey is one of the best all-around poker players, with an incredible success rate in almost all formats of poker, live or online. Many believe short deck to be his favorite game. Having won two Triton Short Deck titles already, the G.O.A.T added the third title to his collection by winning the 2022 Triton Mediterranean Poker Party $30,000 Short Deck Event.

The 45-year-old Poker Hall of Famer defeated 38 entries to claim the title and top prize of $387,000. Ivey’s career tournament earnings have now increased to more than $37.5 million, pacing him 11th on the all-time money list. The 38 entries in the event made a prize pool of $1,140,000, distributed among the top six finishers.

The 2022 Triton Madrid € 30,000 seven max event champion Paul Phua finished just short of the money bubble. Phua returned home without a payout when his A-Q ran into the pocket Kings of Kiat Lee.

Final Table Eliminations

The final six players settled on the final table at the famous Merit Royal Diamond Hotel & Spa. Bracelet winner Daniel Dvoress became the first victim of the final table elimination. Dvoress’s J-10 suits were not enough to dominate the A-K of Tom Dawn. Dvoress received $80,000 for his sixth-place finish. After that, Dawn became the chip leader but soon lost three all-in hands, dragging him to the bottom of the leaderboard. Things started getting worse for Dawn when Ivey’s A-K dominated the pocket jacks. Then, Dawn went all-in with his remaining chips with his K-7 against the 9-8 of Ivey. Finally, Ivey eliminated Dawn by making a ten-high straight. Dawn received $103,000 as a fifth-place finish.

Ivey kept growing his stacks by beating out the A-K suited of four-time Triton champion Mikita Badziakouski with his A-Q. The turn and river benefited Ivey to send Badziakouski home in fourth place for $131,000. 2022 is turning out to be a great year for Badziakouski, with ten final table finishes and $6.7 million in earnings so far. He now has over $40.3 million in career earnings.

Third place favored Kiat Lee when his K-10 suit failed to beat the A-J of bracelet winner Sam Greenwood. Lee cashed $171,000 for his third position.

The Heads-up Play

Ivey entered the heads-up play with a 7,025,000 chip count against the 4,375,000 Greenwood. Greenwood tried to close the margin, but Ivey dragged the lead to almost 2:1. All of the chips went in preflop with Greenwood’s J (Hearts) and J (Diamonds) while Ivey had K (Clubs) and Q (Hearts). Greenwood moved all in, and Ivey called. The board showed Q (Spades), Q (Clubs), 8 (Clubs), 10 (Hearts), and Q (Diamonds). The ten-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner finished the game and received his third triton title by making a quad. Greenwood received $268,000 for his runner-up finish, increasing his career total score to just below $27 million.
