PLO5, also known as 5 Card Omaha, is an entertaining poker game derived from Omaha. This poker variant is a sharp contrast to the hold’em variants; a player is dealt 5 hole cards and 5 community cards are dealt face up.

A PLO5 hand is made up of 5 cards; a player must use two of the hole cards and 3 community cards to make a hand.

In pot-limit 5-card Omaha, the minimum bet is the size of big blind but unlike no-limit Omaha, players can only bet to the size of the pot. The minimum raise amount must be at least equal to the last bet or raise in the round while the maximum raise is determined by the size of the pot.

 

How to play Pot Limit 5 –Card Omaha (PLO5)

A mentioned earlier, PLO 5 gameplay commences after players have been dealt 5 hole cards each. Starting with the player under the gun(UTG), betting action proceeds clockwise.

 

Pre-flop betting

Just like with hold’em poker variants, players can decide whether or not to play their hand after seeing the hole cards. The pre-flop betting round starts with the player on the immediate left of the big blind. The players have to decide whether to fold, call or raise.

For example, if let’s say the big blind was $5, a player can either fold, call the $5 or raise $10. The betting round goes on until all the players have made equal bets in the pot.

 

The second round of betting – The Flop

After the pre-flop round is complete, 3 community cards, known as the flop, are dealt face up and another round of betting ensues. The action starts with the active player clockwise from the button.

 

The third round of betting – The turn

After the second round of betting is complete, one card is then dealt face up. The card is the fourth community card and it is known as ‘The Turn’. As with other betting rounds, the action begins with the active player clockwise from the button. Betting continues until all active players have made equal bets to the pot.

 

The fourth round of betting – The River

When the turn round is complete, another card is dealt face up. The card is the fifth and the last of community cards in PLO5 and signals the final round of betting. The active player clockwise from the button starts the action and the betting round is only complete after all players have made equal bets to the pot.

After the final round of betting is complete, if more than one player remains, the player with the best hand wins the pot. The hand comprises of two of the five holecards and 3 community cards. If two or more players make identical hands, the pot is split evenly between the players.
