Is it game over for Phil Ivey?

Phil Ivey is definitely one of the best poker players alive today. However, all is not well in Ivey’s camp. It may be the beginning of the end for Ivey.

The adage that “the house never loses” was rendered null and void by Ivey and Cheng Yin Sun after winning $10m in Borgata casino at a baccarat table. However, the joy of winning millions was short-lived after the casino sued them for using the underhand tactics-edge sorting technique. You can read about the suit here.

After a protracted legal battle, the ruling did not go Ivey’s way and he was ordered to return the winnings. To further complicate Ivey’s situation, Borgata won a motion to go after Ivey’s assets but they could only find an almost empty bank account. But now Borgata is going after Ivey’s poker winnings.

According to Flushdraw, Borgata’s lawyer, Jeremy Klausner, served a notice to WSOP management that they had obtained “writ of execution against the 10-time bracelet winner for the owed eight-figure amount plus $214,518 in accrued interest.”

Flush Draw also reported that Borgata had obtained the order four months ago. However, they waited until Phil Ivey was bundled out of the Poker Players Championship tournament. It is obvious that they waited until Ivey made substantial earnings to serve WSOP with the notice in an attempt to recoup a fraction of the millions they lost.

However, we are yet to know if Borgata actually received Ivey’s winnings but since the service receipts show that WSOP Vice President received the notice, it is a possibility that Ivey missed out on the winnings. WSOP is yet to comment on the development.

Phil Ivey WSOP 2019 performance in numbers

In the just-ended WSOP, Phil Ivey managed a total of four cashes. He finished 64th in the $800 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack (Event #37) for $3,700. The event had $800 buy-in. He also finished in the money after being eliminated in the 76th place in $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Bounty (Event #44) for $2,752.

Although he did not perform impressively in online events, he managed an 82nd place finish in the $1,000 WSOP.com ONLINE No-Limit Hold’em Double Stack (Event #55). He won $2,533.

Ivey was poised to win a WSOP bracelet before his luck ran out in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship (Event #58) when he was eliminated in 8th place. He won $124,410 which was his biggest cash of the tournament.

He failed to finish in the money after the $50,000 buy-in event.

It is likely that Phil Ivey will never participate in poker events hosted in the U.S. unless he untangles himself from the legal quagmire.
