Layne Flack, who breathed his last at age 52 in July 2021, was nominated as the 2022 Poker Hall of Fame member in a World Series of Poker Hall of Fame Bounty event last week. Flack’s name dominated the nine other nominees, all of whom are well-known and respected figures in the Poker world.

The list includes WPT director Matt Savage, PokerStars founder Isai Scheinberg, Bertrand ‘Elky’ Grospellier, Michael Mizrachi, Josh Arieh, Brian Rast, Mike Matusow, Kathy Liebert, and WSOP commentators Lon McEachern and Norman Chad.

The Voting Process

The voting process started in June when poker lovers nominated the best deserving person. Then, the top 10 names with the highest votes were forwarded to the 30 alive members of the Poker Hall of Fame. Finally, these members voted and selected the best name among the top 10.

The Great Layne Flack

Layne Flack was one of the most skilled professionals in poker, and everybody loved and respected him due to his charismatic and entertaining character. Flack appeared on the scene in late 1990 and became a well-known personality in the early 2000s. The six-time bracelet winner worked at small-scale card clubs in Montana and then started playing poker professionally.

In 2019, Flack shared his thoughts about being in the Hall of Fame in an interview. The South Dakota Native was confident that he will be a part of it and said he would like to be alive when his name is announced. Flack’s name was nominated in 2021 but lost to Eli Elezra. Flack further explained that the politics involving the voting members are the only reason for not nominating him.

Flack’s Achievements

The great Flack earned his first bracelet in 1999 in the $3,000 pot-limit hold’em event, where he received $224,400 for his top finish. The same year, he also earned the name “Back-to-Back-Flack” because he won two tournaments. Moving forward, he won two bracelets in 2002 and 2003.

In 2002, he secured his second bracelet by winning a pair of no-limit hold ’em events where he cashed $571,000. The next year, he was the crowned champion of the $1,500 no-limit hold’em shootout and the $2,500 Omaha hi-lo. His combined earnings for both events were around $239,260. The legend won his final bracelet in the year 2008 in the $1,500 pot-limit Omaha event. In this event, he cashed a career-best of $577,725. Flack’s career earnings are more than $5 million in live tournaments.

Eligibility Criteria for Poker Hall of Fame

There are some rules and regulations for a name to be considered for the Poker Hall of Fame. Firstly, if he is a player, the age limit is at least 4o years. Then, the player must have experience playing high stakes poker “against acknowledged top competition” while “standing the test of time” by playing consistently and earning respect among peers. For non-players, the personality must have “contributed to the overall growth of the game with positive and long-lasting results”.
