A lucky year for the Japanese player! Just a few days after his first-ever PokerGo Tour victory in the 2022 US Poker Open $10,000 big bet mix, Tamon Nakamura, 35, wins the $15,000 Buy-In Eight-Game Event for $239,700. He defeated Poker Hall of Famer Phil Hellmuth heads up.

This is the second title of the series for Nakamura. He earned a handsome amount in four of the six events so far, with a total of $460,900. Nakamura earned many ranking points for his win and his total live tournament earnings were $372,317 before this year. Hellmuth, 57, secured the second position and made $155,100. His career tournament earnings are around $26.7 million.

Nakamura scored 360 Card Player of the Year points and made his way into the top 100 in the 2022 POY race sponsored by Global Poker. This event earned him 240 PGT points and he is now in 17th place on the PokerGo Tour leaderboard.

 

The Final Table

A total of 47 entries participated in this event, which featured a mix of limit Hold’em Omaha eight-or-better, razz, seven-card stud, stud eight or better, pot-limit Omaha, and triple draw deuce-to-seven lowball. Nakamura entered the day seventh in chips and then eliminated Ben Yu to set up a heads-up with Hellmuth.

Jermy Asmus was the first to face the elimination, he finished 7th with earnings of $28,200. This is the 12th final table finish of the year for Asmus. He has a 592-point lead over second-ranked Tony Sinishtaj and is still the leader in the POY race. Currently, he is second in the Player of the Series race after Nakamura.

Scott Seiver lost to Damjan Radanov and finished 6th with a prize of $42,300. Seiver’s career earnings have now increased to more than $24.3 million. His ranking on Card Player’s all-time money list is 23.

Next in the elimination line was Damjan Radanov who lost to Nakamura and earned 5th place for $56,400. Bryan Micon finished fourth for $77,550, his first live tournament cash of the year. Ben Yu lost to Nakamura after a battle of blinds and got the third position for $105,750. His lifetime tournament earnings have now increased to more than $8.6 million.

 

The Heads-up Play

Phil Hellmuth had 3,925,000 to Nakamura’s 3,125,000 in the Heads-up. Nakamura overtook the lead after a big razz hand. Hellmuth’s luck did not favor him and lost another razz pot. Nakamura raised with  A   3   and Hellmuth raised all-in with K  7. The board ran out Q   10   10    Q    9   and Nakamura became champion.

Hellmuth earned $155,100 for second place. His lifetime tournament earnings are now more than $24.2 million. Hellmuth’s total earnings place him at the 24th position on Poker’s all-time money list.
