Vanessa Selbst – The Making of a Poker Titan

Vanessa Selbst was born in 1984 in Brooklyn, New York. Over the years, she has evolved from an amateur poker player to a professional poker player with about 5 WSOP final tables finishes.

Vanessa Selbst graduated high school at a very tender age. She then attended Yale University where she graduated with a degree in Political science. For several years now, she has been an LGBT activist.

She started getting fascinated by cards at a very tender age. But as fate would have it, she would indulge in poker during her higher learning. As it is with most American players, she started playing poker at 18 years in the fast-paced casino environment.

Initially, she made little progress but from the onset, it was clear she could become a poker titan if she polished her act. Well, once she ventured into poker full-time, nothing could stop her. She became an overnight sensation.

Her career took off in 2006 when she finished 7th in a World Series of Poker event.

Notable achievements

Her first substantial live cash came in 2006 when she finished 7th at WSOP $2,000 No Limit Texas Hold ’em event. She took home $100,000.

The following year, in 2007, Vanessa continued her impressive run by reaching the final table of WSOP $5,000 Heads-Up Championship event. She finished 3rd to earn slightly more than $125,000.

In 2008, she posted her most impressive result yet. She won her first bracelet in style. She was able to outwit almost 800 players to win WSOP $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event. For her troubles, she took home $225,000.

At the same WSOP, Selbst posted another impressive result. She finished 3rd in the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship event for slightly more than $100,000.

In 2010, she won the Mohegan Sun Main Event of the North American Poker Tour (NAPT) for $750,000. During the same year, she also finished 4th at European Poker Tour (EPT) High Roller event in London for more than $225,000. Her biggest live cash came in the same year when she won the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event for $1,648,470.

Her run of good results continued into 2011 where she won the NAPT event, again. She earned $450,000.

In 2011, she finished 3rd at WPT’s Five Diamond World Poker Classic event for $338,351.

In 2015, she won a Super High Roller CLebrity Shootout Event, $ 100,000 No Limit Hold’em – Shootout, for $1m.

She currently ranks 55th in the All-Time Money List, 31st on the United States All Time Money list, and 5th on New York, USA All-Time Money list. In popularity ranking, she is 14th and 48,169th in Global Poker Index Ranking.
