Without a doubt, the main event is the most anticipated  WSOP event, live or otherwise. Well, the 2021 World Series of Poker Online $5,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event is over, and Aleksei Vandyshev emerged victorious. Due to the enormous $20,000,000 guarantee, the event drew a staggering 4,092 entries.

The tournament kicked off on Aug 22 with late registration running through Sept 5. The final table of nine was held on September 11. Aleksei Vandyshev, a Russian poker player, emerged victorious to win his maiden WSOP gold bracelet and earned $2, 543,073. Prior to the win, Vandyshev’s largest cash was the $132,089 WPT haul in 2016.

Aleksei Vandyshev wins Final table

When the final day began, Vandyshev was sitting pretty in the chip ranking. He was second to Brazil’s Edson Tsutsumi Jr.

Just a few minutes into the final day, Dimitrios Farmakoulis was eliminated by Joe Serock. Farmakoulis shoved from the small blind with A-K and  Joe Serock called with 6-6. None of the players was able to improve their hands and hence Farmakoulis was eliminated in 9th place for $254,308.

After a couple of hands, Vandyshev caught some action and eliminated Dawid Smolka. Vandyshev moved all-in after flopping a pair of kings. Smolka called with a top pair and was the favorite to win the hand at this point. The 9 river saw Vandyshev make two pairs to win the hand and eliminate Smolka. Smolka earned $339,123.

The field was further narrowed when Renan Meneguetti was eliminated in 7th place for $452,229. Meneguetti shoved from the big blind with Q-10. Tsutsumi Jr called with A-9 (suited). Both players failed to improve and Tsutsumi Jr eliminated Menegutti.

Espen Jorstad was the next player to fall. Jorstad moved all-in with pocket Kings and was called by Nikita Kuznetsov with A-Q. Kuznetsov drew a straight on the turn to win the pot. Jorstad was awarded with $603,057 for his sixth-place finish.

Tsutsumi Jr Remarkable Run

Joe Serock’s impressive run came to an end after failing to double up through Tsutsumi jr. Preflop, Serock had A-K while Tsutsumi Jr held pocket eights. Serock failed to improve his hand and was eliminated in fifth place. However, he smiled all the way to the back after earning his largest tournament cash to date, $804,190. He now has a little more than $4.9 million career winnings.

Tsutsumi Jr continued to impress after eliminating Christine Do in fourth place. Do moved all-in with pocket sixes and Tsutsumi Jr called with pocket tens. Fortunately, Tsutsumi Jr flopped a set and further improved to a full house to eliminate Do. Christine Do earned $1,072,405.

A few hands later, Tsutsumi Jr three-bet all-in with A-10 and was called by Nikita Kuznetsov. Tsutsumi Jr made two pairs on the flop while Kuznetsov failed to improve. Kuznetsov busted in third place for $1,430,073.

With almost a 2:1 chip lead, the odds were heavily leaning towards Tsutsumi Jr to win the tournament. However, Vandyshev impressively fought back to win. Tsutsumi Jr earned $1,907,035 for his runner-up finish.
