Australian cricket legend and former 888poker Team Pro, Shane Warne died from a heart attack aged 52. He was found unresponsive in his room in the tropical region of Koh Samui, Thailand, where he was enjoying his holidays. He was rushed to the Thai International Hospital in Chaweng where he was pronounced dead.

 

Warne and Cricket

Shane Warne is known as the ‘King of spin’ and many regard him as the best spin bowler of all time. Warne redefined spin bowling with his style, action, and accuracy.

Warne started his career as a Cricketer in 1992 at age 23. He played his first Test match against India at Sydney Cricket Ground. He continued and earned his name by taking more than 1000 international wickets in 194 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 145 Test matches.

Shane Warne became the highest wicket-taker in Test matches in 2004 with 708 wickets and held this record till 2007 when Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan surpassed Warne. Shane Warne announced his retirement from all forms of Cricket in 2013. He has earned his name in ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and Cricket Australia’s Cricket Hall of Fame.

Shane Warne’s estimated live tournament earnings are around $161,325. His highest earning from a poker event is A$41,225 ($33,320), which he earned by securing 3rd place in a A$10,200 High Stakes Event. Shane Warne got the fourth position in a A$2500 No-Limit Hold’em event where he earned A$41,225 ($33,320). The 2015 WSOP Main event in Las Vegas earned him a total of $17,282.

Shane Warne finished 22nd in the 2014 WSOP Asia-Pacific Main event. His passion for poker never died and recently he got 7th place in A$1,000 Players Champs at the APT Brisbane Festival. Warne reached the final table of this event and earned A$4,500($3,243).

Jackson Warne, Shane Warne’s son is also a poker player and his total live tournament earnings are around $12,670.

 

A kind-hearted Legend

Warne always kept a soft heart towards the needy. He used his superstar status for raising money and for different charitable causes. Warne started The Shane Warne Foundation in 2004 to help the ill and underprivileged children and Teens. Joe Hachem and Shane Warned hosted a charity poker tournament in 2014 for the fundraising for Warne’s foundation.

In 2020, countrywide bush fires in Australia caused havoc. Warne came forward in this difficult situation and helped raise A$1 million for the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. Warne was kind enough to auction off his “Bagge Green”, which is a cap given to an Australian Poker Player when he represents his country for the first time.

Almost everybody from every walk of life reacted to Shane Warne’s death. From Poker Pros, Poker Platforms to Cricketers, Politicians, Actors, and his fans. Everybody was in shock due to the sudden death of the Legend.
