Ben Palmer won the World Poker Tour Venetian DeepStack Showdown $3,500 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event. He defeated a pool of 734 players to win his first WPT title. He took home $431,655.

Even though it was 340th career live tournament cash, it was his largest. His win took his lifetime poker earnings to $2,732,635.

Coincidentally, it was the first WPT main event held at Venetian Resort, Las Vegas. The turn out was better than expected and the $1,000,000 guarantee was eclipsed by the final prize pool which stood at $2,333,800.

The tournament took three days before finally narrowing down to a final table of nine players. By the end of day 3, Palmer had a sizeable chips lead followed closely by Jay Farber – World Series of Poker main event runner-up.

Ben Palmer Final table recap

Palmer started strongly by knocking out Sean Yu. In an earlier hand, Yu hand seen his pocket jacks lose to Mark loli’s A-Q which made him the short stack. He failed to double-up after getting all-in with A-J against Palmer’s 10-10. He was knocked out in ninth place for $41,665.

Jay Farber was the second player to get knocked out. In his final hand, he got all in with a suited A-9 and Mark Loli called with A-K offsuit. He won $52,790.

The third player to hit the rails was Skip Wilson at the hands of Ben Plamer. Wilson’s 9-9 offsuit was no march for Palmer’s A-K offsuit. Interestingly, Wilson pushed all his chips to the middle of the table and was called by Palmer. His dreams of doubling-up went up in smoke after Palmer landed a pair on the turn to win the pot. Additionally, Wilson finished 7th for $67,675.

After roughly about 70 more hands, William Givens also called it a day after being knocked out by Mark Loli. Givens finished 6th for $87,760.

Loli was later eliminated by Palmer. Initially, Loli landed two pairs on the flop and called a continuation bet from Palmer. Unfortunately for Loli, Palmer landed a straight draw on the turn. Palmer moved all-in on the river to eliminate loli in fifth place for $115,105.

Tony Gargano knocked out Orlando Barrera in 4th place for $152,690. Gargano also knocked out Danny Qutami in third place for $204,810. After knocking out Qutami, Gargano overtook Palmer to clinch the chip lead.

The heads-up play took 64 hands with several lead changes in between. In the final hand, Plamer had Q-10 and Gargano was dealt A-4. The board ran out J-10-9-6-Q. Palmer won the pot with two pairs. Meaning that Gargano finished second for $277,760.

Cardplayer of the year points

For winning the tourney, Palmer was awarded 1,368 Card Player Player of the Year Points. He is now 41st on the POY rankings.
